Valva tricuspidalis is the tricuspid valve of the heart, located between the right atrium and right ventricle. It is so named because it has three flaps or leaflets, which regulate blood flow between the two chambers of the heart. The function of the tricuspid valve is to prevent blood from flowing back into the right atrium when the heart contracts and pumps blood into the pulmonary artery to be sent to the lungs for oxygenation. Certain heart conditions can cause the tricuspid valve to malfunction, leading to a condition called tricuspid regurgitation, in which blood flows back into the atrium and can lead to symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs. Treatment for severe tricuspid regurgitation may require valve repair or replacement surgery.
